WIRELESS EXPERIMENTS.

SHORT WAVE TRANSMISSION. AMATEUR W T ITH AMERICAN FLEET. ASHBURTON, May 16. A resident of Ashburton, Mr W. M.‘ Dawson, lias added to his list of successes as an amateur wireless operator by receiving messages sent out in connection with the tests conducted by the United States Fleet, en route to New Zealand. The flagship Seattle carries several special short-wave transmitters and receivers, in addition to her ordinary equipment. These shortwave sets are in charge of Mr F. H. j chnell, official of the big amateur radio organisation known as the American Radio Relay League. United States Navy officials are desirous of obtaining data of the capabilities of short waves, and it is worthy of note that they have entrusted the task almost entirely to amateurs. The Navy Department has on several previous occasions request?.i the co-operation of members of tlie Radio League, and the latest assignment shows that the department fully appreciates the very important part amateurs have played in the development of short-wave transmission and reception.

Tho amateur station will not handle regular fleet business, but will be free to test witli the amateurs of all countries at all times.

Mr Schnell is to be given special shore leave in all parts to enable him to further the work of the Radio Relay League in Australia and New Zealand.
