SHANNON NOTES.

SCHOOL COMMITTEE. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The first meeting of the new School Committee was held on Friday evening. Present: Messrs If. Tippler (chairman). Watkins, Brown, »Rraun, Phillips, Burns, Roberts, and Blackwood The Education Board wrotq thanking the committee for its reasonable attitude in regard to the school residence. 'die board stated it was its endeavour to do the best possible for the comfort, of the leachera with the means available. It was resolved that a petition be circulated among householders fo.* their signatures requesting the department, to erect a. new residence, It is to be pointed out thut the department ift prepared to spend a considerable sum in renovating, while very little more would be required to erect a new building. The stationmaster wrote drawing the Oonunittee's attention to the danger to children at the railway crossings. Some children were in tho habit of crossing the line when trains were approaching. The headmaster was instructed to warn children of the danger. Tile Education Board wrote stating that if would not bo in the interests of the children to accede to the request for the re-examination of Standard VI. pupils.

The question of planting shrubs on Arbor Day in (lie north-east and eastern portions of the school was favourably considered. The Slate Forest Department offered to supply 200 trees. A committee was set up to go into the question of cost, etc.

The question of shelter sheds at Kingston road and Krau road was considered, line the department is to be written to asking it to put the matter in operation. This children are conveyed to school per motor ’bus and the sheds would be a great protection for them while waiting for the 'bus, especially in windy and wet weather. A request to the department for rubbish tins and rubbish destruoter is to be made. The chairman and Mr Blackwood were appointed a visiting committee for the month, Messrs Tipler, Watkins and Blackwood were appointed a committee to go inlc the finances of the school and report. RUGBY FOOTBALL.

The Rugby competitions were continued on, Saturday in fine weather. Ihe principal local game was Foxton and Shannon juniors, which -.vas played on the Domain before a fair n imber of spectators. The guriie was full of interest from the kickoff until the finul whistle sounded, Shannon winning 12 points to 9. Foxton had the upper hand in the first spell, scoring six .points—a fine kick which Iluff turned to account and a try scored by Kere, for which McMurray made the opening. In the second spell Shannon forwards, with the wind behind them, kept the game close and allowed tho fast Foxton hacks few opportunities of opening out, although Foxton’s try was a fine piece of work, tin backs handling the ball well and enabling Procter to score. Ilenriekson and Iloiiinson (2) scored the tries for Shannon, while Aim kicked a beautiful goal from a free kick, just on the call of time. During the first spell Davey received a nasty kick in the head, the injury requiring medical attention. His place was taken by Buckman. Mc-Muray (forward) and Kere (half-back) were the most prominent players for Foxton, while Ilenriekson, Robinson, Wildbore, Terry) Satherley and Aim did good work for Shannon. Shannon fourths defeated Levin District High School by nine points to six. Mr R. Sands, who lias taken up the whistle this season, controlled both games and gave every satisfaction. Tho seniors played Weraroa at Levin, there being no score. The local team were without the sendees of Williams and Lenihan, two of our best backs. It appears also thut some of the players took exception to tho way the team was picked and did not play. Shannon this year had the best team out for years past, and it is a pity that, dissatisfaction should have crept in so ca.rly in the season. Tne writer hopes that all differences of opinion will be mutually settled and that we shall again see our best team n action. Mr R. Moynihan was the only nomination from Horowhenua for inclusion in the All Black team.

An act worthy of mention is that of a local resident who, on winning a guessing contest for a baby doll, forwarded the prise to the children's ward of the Palmerston North Hospital. Footballers can no longer be interfered with during the play by the spectators crowding on the line. The committee has erected a stout wire fence on each side of the grounds, and this is a decided improvement.

The heavy rains experienced during the past week were the means of causing t. big slip op the side of the hill at the No 2 dam at Mangahno. The slip took the elevated tram staging away and deposited it into the river, whence it disappeared completely. The slip also damaged ono of the valves or. the syphon chamber for the tipping of the gates. There was also a succession of slips along the new road, and gangs are now at work repairing the damage.
