RUGBY FOOTBALL.

TE KAWAU SUB-UNION. (From our Rongotea Correspondent.) Saturday’s senior matches resulted: Central 11 v. Awahuri 0: United 23 v. Hui Mai 6. The competitions were advanced another stage on Saturday afternoon, Central and United being the winning teams. Taking as a criterion the display of Hui Mai in previous matches, United’s large margin over this team was unexpected. Played at Oroua Downs, the first spell was evenly contested, but in the Becond half the yellow and blacks triumphed over the blue and whites in no uncertain manner, tries coming to the fast moving home backs at periodical intervals. Mr G. Fitzgerald controlled the game. At Awahuri, where the home team and Central were the contesting sides, the visitors had no trouble in securing the victory. . Although the scores indicate even game, the issue was never in doubt. From the kick off green (Central) were early on the offensive and from some loose work the visiting backs initiated a brilliant passing movement,' nix bncks handling and a cross kick from the wing allowed the green forwards to come through with their usual dash, Haucox going across for Amadio to add the extra points. After fifteen minutes play fast forward work by tlie greens brought two further unconverted tries, through the agency of W. and 12. Gust, bringing Centftd’B final total to 11 points. With eleven points margin the greens adopted very lackadaisical methods, good play suffering .ns a' consequence. After the spell greens endeavoured to increase the score, but lack of combination in the backs nullified good openings, the red and blacks more or less holding them. Loose forward rushos by the greens in which Haneox, Howell, and \\. Gust excelled, proved ineffectual and u. more or less medicore display ended without further score. Air H. N. Gave was the referee.

JUNIOR MATCHES.

(From our Sandon Correspondent.)

The junior fixture, Hui Alai v. United, played at Ohakoa on Saturday, resulted in a very even contest, the scores being a try scored by Job Hanis (Hui Alai) and a penalty goal for United. During the last ten minutes llui Mai were getting (he best of it but could not add to their total. Mr Stan Reeve was in control and gave every satisfaction to both sides. Mr Ken Marsh; who met with an accident during the playing of the game with Central on Saturday week, is making good progress towards recovery. Ken is very popular with his club mates and they hope he will soon be able to again don the jersey.

Clements to donate a challenge cup valued at twenty to twenty-vo guineas for competition among Poverty Bay, East Coast, Bay of Plenty, Southern Hawke’6 Bay, Hawke’s Bay. Bush and Manawatu Unions and adjoining Poverty Bay Sub-Unions. Poverty Bay is to be the first holders of the trophy, the first match to be played at Gisborne.
