IMPROVING THE TOWN

The young people of St. Paul’s Wesley Guild last evening met under the chairmanship of Mr itidgar Lock to consider the syllabus subject: “Plow may we improve our town ■’’ Amongst the suggestions offered by these citizens of to-morrow for borough betterment were several 11 1 nt merit mention. These included provision for the diminution of nerve-wracking noises; the scientific elimination of the smoke nuisance of chimneys anil train funnels; safeguarding the picturesqiieness of the sky-line; limiting the height and preventing the projection hedges oier the footwav; providing cycle tracks for one-way traffic and beautifying odd corners about the borough. It was suggested that girls of athletic tastes might establish gumes clubs for children in connection with all our public parks; and that young moil might institute a “Happy Sumirfer Hour” for the organisation of play amongst boys, lhe provision of covered playing areau at the schools for wet weather recreation was advocated. To encourage the policy of tree .planting, lawn laying and flower growing in the streets it was suggested that the care of such might be allocated to area committees, which, in conjunction With tbo reserves committee of the Borough Council might organise “Boys’ Civic Chibs’ in each street or block. The could provide the tools for caring for, the luwns and flower plots and the boys could work under a captain of their own choosing, who would take instructions from the borough engineer. The schools could give encouragement to this piece of civic service. Another matter tha twas urged was the conversion of disused gravel pits into gardens and playing grounds, a work that would involve little expense and remove some unsightly features of the town.
