WOMAN’S SURPRISE ARREST. STRANGE STORIES TO POLICE. SYDNEY, May 1. Investigations by four plain-clothes men from the George street north police station culminated yesterday atternoon in tne arrest or the proprietress iif a city residential, and the disclosure of a remarkable story regarding theits that had occurred on tne premises. After they httd taken rooms reports of thetts were often made. ■ For a long time the police were puzzled about tho reports or robberies, and yesterday Constables Tracey, Nuss, Brown and Robinson, who had the inquiries in .iiaii-d, decided on surprise aetion. Obtaining a search warrant, they visited the residential and made a thorough examination of the premises. Tho result was that £SO wortn of property was seized, which* is believed to De tne proceeds of robberies inside tne house. . Tho proprietress was arrested, and it was afterwards alleged that she was wearing clothe,- murked with the names of women who uad reported losses from rooms there. Six charges have been laid respecting property valued at £IBO. , . A typical story told to tho police is that ot four miners from Kurri Kurn, who said they were met at the station by a man who gave them a business card of the residential. They went there, and one morning, when requested to do so, left their keys so thatthe rooms could be cleaned. When they returned four watches and chains and" a total of nearly £4O were missing.
