COMMUNICATION INTERRUPTED.

Per Press Association. TAUMARUNUI, May 15.

Exceptionally heavy rainfall, accompanied by lightning and thunder, was experienced last night. Since Tuesday 6.81 inches of rain have fallen and yesterday morning the Wanganui river had risen over three feet, but when the rain ceased it fell ugain. Last night’s heavy downpour, however, caused the river to rise five feet above the usual level at nine o’clock. Between ten and eleven o clock the river rose anQther foot and only tho protective gnoynes are saving the lower portions’of the town from flood. Awashout on the main highway about six imle3 north of Taurnarunui has cut off connectiofi with Oh lira and Te Kuiti. Later. The road aommunication north and south is now blocked by washouts at tho in the south and Taringamotu in the north. Tho rain is easing off at present.
