SPORTING

NOTES. CBjr "Flaneur.”) Sea View was recently schooled over hurdles at« Hajvera and gave a creditable display: After competing in the flat events at the Wanganui meeting Alaric will bo taken to Auckland for the Great Northern meeting. Master Peter will be raced over hurdles at the Hawke’s Bay meeting and later on will tackle steeplechases again. He is doing all required of him on the Trentham tracks. Recruits to the hurdling game who may be seen out at the Egmont fixture are Asleep, Sunny Vale, Arsene, Lupin, Wee Sandy, All Wind, Glen Canny and Passionate. At Bulls Omahu and Brigadier Bill are going well and the latter especially is being sorted out as likely to show big improvement this season over the hurdles.

The Foxton-owned Rouex, the halfbrother to Rouen, by Kilbroney, will shortly enter J. H. Prosser’s stable, at Porirua.

The admirers of Frisco Mail give it out that he will he troublesome in important hurdle and ’chasing events during the winter months. W. Rayner intends to give- Motley and Deluge a spell, and it is probable they will not be seen out again until the Wanganui spring meeting comes round.

Charlatan (J. Kaan) jumped five of the schooling fences at Riccarton the other morning, Whipcord (W. Scobie) joining in later and jumping the last three. Both horses gave a satisfacory exhibition. It is reported that Bonomel, who won a hurdle race at the recent Feilding meeting, has been bought by a Canterbury sportsman, and the son of Boniform-Phiiomel will shortly go into a Riccarton stable.

It is understood that Luke Wilson, who awhile back bad charge of the late Arthur Oliver’s team at Awapuni, has accepted a position as private trainer to a Hawke’s Bay owner.

Earl Sande, the famous American jockey, is recovering from last year’s injuries. He lias left the Sinclair stables, and gets a retiner of £3OOO a year from Phillip Widener (says a New York cable.)

According to a northern scribe, a lady supporter of Archibald grew very excited at the finish of the Welter at Avondale. “Archibald! Archibald,” she screamed. “What’s the matter, dear!” responded a wit in a higher seat. Then all was silence—except for the laughter. Mr Greenwood will be represented at the Hauwke’s Bay meeting by Gloaming and Haze. The former is engaged in the Hawke’s Bay Stakes and the J. D. Ormond Memorial Cup, and Haze in the Hawke’s Bay Cup. Both horses are reported to be in good fettle.

The speedy Rational, who was recently purchased by the New Plymouth ownertrainer, R. Johnson, will be schooled by P. Johnson with a view to hurdle racing. If the son of Absurb shows any aptitude for the game, he may be sent to Melbourne to race over fences.

No less than 23 horses claim the double engagement in connection with this year’s Great Northerns. They include Highway, Omahu, Brigadier Bill, Sir ltoseberry, Frisco Mail, Carawoek, Black Art, Passin’ Through Prince Rufus, Savoury, Young Thurnham, Sea De’il, Landbird, Lochson, Buckeye, Never Despair, King Abbey, Dick, Mary Bruce, Glenotus, Active, Irish Jig and Peter Amans.

Tame Fox, who is now in the care of H. Doyle, of Palmerston North, is being got ready for winter racing. Tame Fox is nine years old. He started three times last winter, following on nearly a year’s rest, and he has done no racing since. As the son of Volpone shows to advantage in heavy going, the next few months’ racing fixtures should suit him.

Negotiations are in progress for the return of H. Gray to England, to ride for Sir Cunliffe Owen, by whom he was retained during his previous visit, states the Christchurch Star. If Gray decides t-o go to England, he will be accompanied by two light weights, one of them his son, who lias already ridden a few winners, and the other a nephew. The well known “Davey” Straclian died at the Christchurch Hospital a few duy ago. During his long association with the galloping sport he was at different times in the employ of R. J. Mason, S. Waddell, H. and A. Cutts and F. D. Jones. Straclian was in the latter’s stable up to three years ago, when lie retired from work owing to illhealth.

Four yearlings arrived at Chokebore Lodge from Stonyhurst recently. They were all fillies, and comprise Wild Work, by Autumnus —Helter Sketler; Green Cloth, by the Act—Equipment; Front Rank, by Warplane—Discipline; and Star Thistle, by the Ace —Scottish Star, Card Trick, by The Ace—Counterfeit ; Record Trip, by The Ace —Sailor’s Hope, and Sightseer, Autumnus — Telescope, are due to arrive shortly to join H. and A. Cutt’s team.

It is stated that H. Gray has asked Mr J. M. Cameron for the ride on The Hawk at Hastings. Gray’s riding has on three occasions helped to bring about the defeat of Gloaming, for the redoubtable Taranaki horseman was on Desert Gold, Sasanof and Thespian in the wins against the son of The Welkin. It goes without saying that if Gray rides The Hawk against Gloaming at the Hawke’s Bay meeting the combination will have a big following. There is a good prospect of Amythas being again prominent on the racing track, says a Wellington writer. He lias for some time been under the care of J. H. Prosser at Porirua, and so far ho lias done all that has been asked of him in a very satisfactory manner, and without, the least sign of tlie trouble which caused his retirement. The veteran trainer has high hopes that this first-class racehorse will be fit to race in the early spring, if not before. Amythas will be nine years old next foaling.

The ex-Palmerstonian, George Price, who is now doing well in Sydney, being associated with' the successes of Windbag and other smart animals, sent three yearlings over by the Ulimaroa, which arrived in Wellington a few days ago, and they are to have a few months of New Zealand’s climate before being returned to Sydney there to be prepared for racing. Australians have paid many tributes to New Zealand as a place for the rearing of the thorouglibred. This is a compliment of a practical kind. In opening its comment on racing in New Zealand during the last season, tlie Bloodstock Breeders’ ' Review said: “All interested in the welfare of the turf in New Zealand are sorely troubled by the oppressive load of taxation racing has to bear. Earnest representations have been made to the. Government, but apart from one or two minor concessions which have afforded little relief, the authorities, whilst professing to be sympathetic continue to make their extortionate demands'.” Last season racing clubs paid £452,467 iss Id in taxation.

Strange though it may seem in these days wli'en so much money has come into the for the season’s wheat and wool, the totalisator receipts at race, meetings .have fallen, off considerably (says a Sydney paper). The investments at the A.J.C. Easter meeting amounted to £301,057 10s, compared with £329,852 10s, for the corresponding meeting of last year—a decrease of £28,794. The chief stake winners at the A.J.C. Easter meeting at Randwick were: T. Foy (Ist Sydney Cup, 2nd Cumberland Stakes, 3rd A.J.C. Plate), £6,833; It. Miller (Ist St. Leger, 2nd Sydney Cup, Ist Cumberland Stakes,. Ist A. J.C. Plate), £6,666; A. McFarlane (Ist Sires’ Produce Stakes, 2nd Champagne Stakes), £5,563; B. Chaffey (Ist Easter Stakes, Ist Champagne Stakes, 2nd All Aged Stakes), £4598 ; J. P. Arthur (Ist Doncaster), £3,028; C. B. Kcllow (Ist Autifmn Stakes, Ist Flying, Ist div) £2,545; J. M.
