RETIRING FROM POLITICS.

SIR R. HEATON RHODES. Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, March 30. When Sir R. Heaton Rhodes was on a visit- to the Kiieismere electorate recently he was asked by a deputation of his constituents to reconsider his decision not to offer himself for re-eleotion at the general election. Sir Heaton promised to reconsider the matter, but stated that before giving his reply he would consult his medical adviser as to the state of his health. Sir Heaton’s medical adviser in Christchurch gave it as his opinion that it was inadvisable for him, in his present state of health, to take part in a political campaign. Sir Heaton then consulted a well-known Wellington doctor, who informed him definitely that in the interests of his health, it was imperative he should give up the idea of facing the strain of another election. In view of this advice Sir Heaton has decided to adhere to his previous decision not to be a candidate for the Ellesmere seat at the general elections. In regard to the selection of a successor for Ellesmere, the usual course will be followed, that is, the selection will be left to Reform constituents, and supporters of the Reform party in the electorate will be asked to select their own candidate.
