CRIMINAL GANGS.
POLICE OUT TO SMASH THEM.
FLYING PATROLS. MELBOURNE, March 18. Determined efforts are to be made to make Melbourne a safe city to live in. One hundred specially selected police, equipped with all modern means of transport—motor cars, motor cycles, push bikes —arc to be appointed to end the criminal reign of terror. The Chief Commissioner (Mr Nicholson) said to-day: “We arc determined to smash those organised gangs of dangerous criminals terrorising citizens and flouting the law. We will tnako a careful selection throughout the Stuto and pick out the most tried and trusted officers for this vital work. Police in the country will have an equal chance with those stationed in the city and suburbs. “When the financial year commences, we will ask tho Government for money to purchase a fleet of light motor cars, motor cycles, and bicycles, and tlieso will be used by our specially selected men. “Working in conjunction with the present wireless patrol,” Mr Nicholson added, “our new men will strike terror into the hearts of the wrongdoers. To replace these men, 100 recruits will be taken into the uniformed force. We will rid the Slate of these dastardly criminals.”
