RUGBY FOOTBALL.

GAME AT OROUA DOWNS

On Saturday a fifteen from Messrs Smith, Ritchie and Co. journeyed to Oroua Downs to engage in a friendly match with the Kaimatarau Club. The home team, playing with the advantage of the wind in the first spell, held the upper blind, but the sole contribution forthcoming was from a try by Hunt in the five-eighth line. Following the interval the visitors attacked, and Richardson equalised by crossing after a good bit ol work by Bruce. The success appeared to stimulate the town team, and solo efforts by Taylor qnd Ellis narrowly missed tries. In the closing moments the home fifteen made big elforts to snatch the victory, and a pretty movement, in which practically all tiic rearguard figured, terminated in Watkins crossing unopposed. The whistle sounded with the scores reading: Kaimatarau 6, Smith, Ritchie and Co. 3. When the attention of the referee was directed to the fact that overtime had been played, during which the additional try had been made, he ordered rest mption for a further ten minutes, but the losers failed to make good the leeway. The visiting combination, which contains in its ranks a number of exponents who will be figuring in local club football during the season, purposes playing friendly matches with Rongotea and Sanson before the season opens locally.
