STREET FATALITY.

CYCLIST KILLED INSTANTLY

RUN OVER BY MOTOR LORRY.

When cycling from town round the intersection of Church and McGiffert streets about 5.30 p.m. on Saturday a married man, aged 41, named Walter James Baigent, by some means got in the track of a four-ton motor lorry going in the samo direction and was run over and killed instantly. The unfortunate cyclist, who was a carpenter residing at 23 Worcester street, was proceeding behind the motor lorry along Church street, with another lorry following. As tho first vehicle took tho turn into McGiffert street deceased, according to the police statement, cut in on the left-hand side and apparently his machine skidded on the turn, throwing the rider in the path of the weighty vehicle. The rear wheel passed over deceased’s head, crushing it, and death must have been instantaneous. The rest of his body showed no signs of injury. The bicycle was damaged considerably. The lorry, which was driven by a man named Milligan, was owned by Messrs Child Brothers, and a representative of the firm at once advised the police and summoned medical assistance, which, however, proved: quite unavailing. The driver had no knowledge that a cyclist was travelling behind him, and on feeling a bump looked back and saw tlio man lying on the road dead. Much sympathy will be extended to deceased’s widow and family of four children.

An inquest will be held to-morrow
