ARTILLERY CAMP
19th, BATTERY AT FOXTON. (From Our Foxton Correspondent.) Yesterday afternoon the 19th Battery, New Zealand Artillery, "which is encamped on the local racecourse held an "at home," when about 100 visitors were present, including Colonel officer c*mmai»ding Central Dmsion, Palmerston North; Colonel Gardiner, D.0.A., Wellington: Major Garner, Palmerston North; Captain | Ivory, Wellington;. Lieutenant Neville, Wellington; Mr and Mrs F. J. Nathan, JPalmerston North; and Messrs Keeble and Barber, members of the board of racecourse trustees. ' Upon arrival the visitors were conducted to the gun position, winch was located in the plantation at the reai of the course, where Colonel Powles explained the objective, preparation and firing of the 60-pounders. Series of six shots were then fired over a range of six miles, the party in the meantime having proceeded to, the .observation station, which was situated aobut ouu yards in front of the guns, to observe the results of the firing. After an inspection of the guns and ctimp, the officers and men entertained the visitors to afternooW tea, when Colonel Powles and Captain lenton, the officer in charge, spoke in appreciation of the Foxton people and also of the Racing Club for its courtesy in allowing the use of the grounds for the camp. Mr W. E. Barber replied on behalf of the Racing Club, while Mr Chryfctall, Mayor of Foxton, thanked the visitors for the entertainment provided, stating that Foxton was pleased to have the camps there. At 11 o'clock last night two "surprise shots" were fired, somewhat startling residents. The battery broke camp this morning and entrained for Wellington.
