HOKOWHITU MATTERS

MEETING OF ASSOCIATION. VARIOUS MATTERS DISCUSSED. The first annual meeting of the Hokowhitu Ratepayers' and Electors' Association was held last night, when there was an attendance of about 20 members, the retiring president, Mr W. S. Woodroofe, being in the chair. Lengthy correspondence was received from the town clerk in reference to matters recently placed by the association before the Borough Council. STREET LIGHTING. In connection with the request for better lighting in several of the streets, the town clerk stated that the council had authorised tho erection of four lights in the district, one in Fitzroy street, another in Ihaka street, and two in Ruahine street. The following motion was carried after some discussion: —"That, while appreciating tho extra lighting that has been provided, we wish to point out the*inadequacy of the lighting in Pahiatua street and Te Awe Awe street between Scandia and Alexandra streets, and respectfully ask that two extra lights be placed in Pahiatua street and one in the last-named street." SEWERAGE IN HOKOWHITU. With reference to the resolutions passed by the association at a previous meeting in connection with Hokowhitw sewerage, the town clerk stated that the matter had been reported on by by the borough engineer on December 1, and a copy of the report, which has already been published in the "Standard," was enclosed for the benefit of the association. The matter of the drainage of.the lagoon and the cost of connection with sewers had been referred to the works committee, while the matter of the development of the Domain in Scandia street had been left in the hands of the reserves committee. The association would be advised as soon as possible of the reports oi these committees.

After a brief discussion the following motion was carried:—"That we enter an emphatic protest against a paragraph in the. borough engineer's report on the Hokowhitu sewerage scheme, placing the blame for the delay on Messrs Sutton and Amos, inasmuch as in the same report he states that the contract work was finished one month before the pumping station was completed." PAHIATUA STREET BUS SERVICE. In reference to the Pahiatua street bus service, the town clerk stated that it had been decided to reinstate the service by running a return trip, afternoon and evening, on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, for a trial period of three months, the route to include Manawatu street and the bottom end of Scandia-street. A fare of lourpenee would be charged passengers travelling beyond the corner of Scandia and Pahiatua streets. In reference to the charges made against bus drivers by members of the deputation which waited upon the council, the town clerk stated that the members who had 'nade the accusations had failed to appear before u special meeting of the transit committee and substantiate tho charges. It had been decided to tako no further action in the matter.

The chairman commented that the members oi; the deputation had not received an invitation to appear before the special committee meeting, and consequently they had not attended. Mr J. Winton stated that he was one of the members who had made the charges, but he had not been notified of the meeting. Had he known, he would have attended and substantiated the accusations.

After several other members bad spoken, it was decided to inform the council that the association had not been notified of any meeting, and that the members who had made the charges would have attended had they known. It was also decided that Messrs Winton and Hepburn be empowered to wait on the traffic manager to endeavour to find out whether a bus would be run on "off" nights if there were six or seven passengers offering.

GENERAL. It was resolved to point out to the Palmerston North River Board that metal was still being removed from Brightwater Terrace. The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted as follows:—President, Mr A. W. Sutton; secretary, Mr F. O. Amos; treasurer, Mr H. Whitehead. The attention of the Borough Council is to be drawn to the fact that storm water ■ accumulates during wet weather at the intersection of Alexandra and Te Awe Awe streets and on the Domain and in Pahiatua street. Messrs Davidson, Sutton and Shailer were appointed a committee to draw up proposals for the association's programme in respect to the corning muni-' cipa) elections, their report to be made to a meeting of the association on March 4. The balance-sheet, as presented by the secretary, showed that the association had cash in hand amounting to £6 Is 2d. A hearty vote of thanks and a small honorarium were accorded the secretary for his services since the | inception of the association. The following resolution was carried: "That, in the opinion of this association, all business of the Borough Council should be taken in open meeting and not in committee."
