OROUA UOUNTY COUNCIL. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Cr Vincent attended the meeting of the Oroua County Council after tne luncheon adjournment. With reference to an adjourned application from -Messrs Graham and Reed on behalf of the executors m the estate ol the late Air John McLennan, with regard to the dedication of a road running uirough the property, a sub-committee was set up to deal with tne matter, it was decided to close the council offices for the usual Christmas vacation. Referring to the treasurer’s statement the chairman jCr AlcEiroy) remarked that the position was very satisfactory and he did not know when they had been previously in so strong a position. HIGH SCHOOL. ’ In order to fill the appointments rendered vacant by tho resignation of Aliss Porter, ALA., and Miss E. AI. Derrick, M.A., out of twenty applications the Bourd of Alanagers of the High School has appointed Aliss W. G. Farquharson, AI.A., and Air K. Ross, ALA. Aliss AI. G. Farquharson was educated at the Otago Girls’ High School and the Otago University, und trained in the Teachers’ Training College _at Dunedin under Professor D. R. White, fjho took her B.A. degree in mathematics, education, English, mental science, French and Latin,' and her AI.A. degree in the last two subjects. After several years’ teaching; service in New Zealand she visited America and Europe, spending five months in France, where she obtained the international Phonetic Diploma in French. She also attended the Oxford University vacation course in education, where she became acquainted with a number of leaders of English educational thought. Her brother, Mr R. A. Farquharson, was the second New Zealand Rhodes Scholar. Aliss Farquharson is at present senior mistress in the Invercargill Technical High School, and one of the three or four women in the Dominion who are in Grade VI in tho service. Air K. Ross was educated at Napier Boys’ High School, at Victoria University College, and at King’s College, Cambridge, lie is at present senior assistant master ut Hastings Technical High School, where ho has been for seven years. During the war he completed two years’ sorvice abroad, and for nearly a year was lecturer in economics under the N.Z. Expeditionary Force education scheme. His work in this sphere was highly commended by Professor J B Condliffe, tho officer in charge.
