SHANNON BRIDGE.
A NEW SITE NECESSARY
PUNT TO BE USED IN MEANTIME. (From our Foxton Correspondent.) Since tho flood carried away the western spun on the Shannon side of the bridge which crosses the .Manawatu river at Moutoa, connection by this route _ with Shannon lias been cut off and much inconvenience suffered by the settlers and public interested. . The authorities are taking tlic necessary steps to replace the span, hut owing io the erosion which bus taken place, the work will take longer thun was at first anticipated. The engineers have reported that, . m order to safeguard the bridge against floods in the future, a new site will be necessary. , The Highways Board now has control of this particular highway and acting in conjunction with the I lorowhenuu Count) t ouncil is restoring communication. The county workmen are providing access to the river'to connect with a punt, 24ft. by 16ft., which will ferry traffic across, and which is hoped to he in order in about a fortnight. The punt will be operated by a hand, winch and cable from either side. The punt will be large enough to accommodate two motor ears at a time and lorries up to three tons loaded.
