TERRACE END SCHOOL

MEETING OF COMMITTEE. The usual monthly meeting- of flic Terrace End School Committee was held in the school last night, Dll- G. 11. Stiles presiding. Otherk .present were Dlessrs W. Hebden, A. E. Allen, 11. N. Bpvis, W. J. Woollett, W. B. Cameron, L. Pierard and T. A. Ilnstings (secretary). Dli- A. W. Sutton wrote asking whether the Education Bour-d had taken any further action in regard to warning children, per medium of the school journal, of trie danger of coming into contact with electric wires which have been' brought down by trees or storms —It was decided to advise the writer that further enquiry would be made. A letter was received Jrom tlie Schools’ Sports Association inviting the committee to attend the annual sports to-dav and asking that the school be closed. —Agreed to. HEADMASTER’S REPORT. The headmaster (Dir G. E. Overton) in his report slated that tho average attendance for the month had boon 620 out of an average roll of 664 The present rolr number was 661. Four trainees —Dliss Buchanan, Dlessrs Tier, White and Stannard, were leaving this year to enter tho Teachers’ Training College. During tho term they had done excellent work in assisting with the sports department. The standard throe girls were runners-up for the rounders banner. Inspector DlcCaskill, of Hawke’s Bay, assisted by. Dir Lyail, had conducted the proficiency examinations on Monday. Of 57 candidates, 55 had gained proficiency and two competency, there being no failures. Great credit was due to Dir Campbell, standard six teacher. The whole of the stall' had worked excellently during the year. The experiment of organising on a “capacity” basis as far as possible, hud proved a doeidod success and would be repeated next year.- Visitors during the month wore Inspectors DlcCaskill and Lyail, Dlessrs Hodge (architect), Skinner (attendance inspector), and Hogg (agricultural •supervisor). Dir Hodge had already prepared plans for re-building, although no grant had yet been made by the department. The school’s sports team had been very well trained for to-day’s sports. The board had fixed the summer vacation from December 19th to February 3rd.—The report was adopted. GENERAL. . It was decided to erect a high diving platform in.the baths; ..the. opinion being expressed that it was necessary. With regard to the proposed school concert, it was stated that it had been "found impossible to secure the Opera House on a suitable date, and it hud been found that the hire of tiie Empire Hall was not much greater than that of the Coronation Hall, while the conveniences were much better. The lighting at the latter building Was considered hud. It tvuis eventually decided to secure the Empire Hall for December 17th. It was resolved to allow the llokowhitu pupils to use the but-hs during School hours, the times to he arranged. Accounts amounting to £54 3s 6d were passed for payment.
