A London cablegram states that the House of Clergy declined to adopt a proposal to provide a burial service for unbaptised babies. Canon Harwell Stone particularly objected to reading over an unbaptised child the words of the. service: “He shall feed His Hock like a shepherd.” The London Sunday Express says there is no doubt in oliicial circles that the Singapore base will bo completed according to the original plan. A London cable states that the Marlborough, one of the “wooden walls of Old England,” sank while being towed from Portsmouth to Osea Island, on the Essex coast. Four of the crew were drowned. The death is announced from Brussels of Puccini, the composer of “La Bohemc,” and ‘‘Madame Butterfly,” who passed away in the arms of his daughter at a nursing home, where he arrived 10 days ago for the purpose of an operation on his larynx. He underwent radium treatment and benefited, but collapsed unexpectedly from a heart attack.

Eighty-five thousand immigrants entered the United States clandestinely during the last fiscal year, said the United States Secretary for Labour (Mr Davis) when speaking af; the American Club in Buenos Aires. Ho said much of the illegal immigration came over the Mexican and Canadian borders. It was estimated that 35,000 seamen arrived in the United States ports andnever took tho return journey. Mr Davis cited figures as showing whatwould happen if tho' United States throw the immigation doors open. He estimated that 10,000,000- Europeans wanted to enter the country, but it could not absorb that number econo--■'c-ally.
