Queen Alexandra attained her 80th birthday to-day. A London 'cablegram states that on Saturday she drove out in an open car and was looking well. The Returned Soldiers’ Association, which during the year, has held most successful Saturday evening dances at its C'lub house, brought the season to a close on Saturday evening, when between 200 and 300 patrons enjoyed the entertainment provided for them by tho committee'. Balloons, streamers, fancy ptyier hats anti novelties of every description were provided, and these, combined with lucky spot dances and twilight dances (which have been very popular with patrons during the season and which were loudly encored), made for a spirit of real happiness for everyone present. Prizes were won in tho lucky spot dances by Alisses AI. Watson and J. Swan, who were the recipients of handsome boxes of chocolates, arid by Messrs 1). Glendining and Ivan Burke who appreciated the prizes awarded them. During the evening the dancers were regaled with fruit salad, ice cream and soft drinks, and later a special and dainty supper was served by the committee who have laboured hard during the season to make the dances tho undoubted success they have been. Messrs D. Dilks and A. P. Butcher ably conducted the dance. A special feature of the evening was the electriclighting of tho ballroom for the first time which was favourably commented upon by those present. Shortly after supper Father Christmas made liis appearance among the dancers, tho ballroom being partlydarkened during his entrance which added considerably to the effect of his arrival. The gocxl old man showed his appreciation of the warm welcome extended to him by distributing presents to everyone. The evening was fittingly brought to a happy ending by the display of falling decorations, yards of streamers and showers of confetti, the singing of “Auld Lang Syne” and “For They Are Jolly Good Fellows” terminating one of the most successful seasons held by tho local branch of the R.S.A.
