GALE IN BRITAIN
TERRIFIC SEAS IN CHANNEL. MUCH DAMAGE TO SHIPPING. [By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.] Received November 28, 2.5 p.m. LONDON, Nov. 27. England has been swept by a sixty miles an hour gale, causing much damage and terrific seus iri the channel. The small steamer Hartley hurst her hatches and sunk. The whole of the crew except two were drowned. The channel steamer Dieppe was stranded in durkness inside the Newhaven breakwater. A tug going to her assistance foundered, but the crew were rescued afterwards. The Dieppe’s 65 passengers wero rescued.
The steam drifter Preeholme was driven ashore on a precipitous coast. The Port Lethen broke up in ten minutes, and five of the ' crew wero drowned. Three took refuge on a wave swept lock and were heroically rescued by fishermen. A man named Craig, aged 72, who leaped from tho rock with a line, hauled them to safety. Many small craft were in peril during the storm. There were a number of thrilling lifeboat Htcues. —A. and N.Z. cable.
