WIN FOR CHINESE TEAM. lIAWKE’S BAY BEATEN BY TWO GOALS TO NIL. Per Press Association. NAPIER July 23. The Chinese University students’ Association football team gained their iirst victory in the Dominion this afternoon, when on McLean Park they defeated the Hawke’s Bay representatives by two goals to nil. The day was an ideal one lor spectators and players alike, bright sunshine tending to take tho keenness out of the light breeze that blew down-field. The ground was in excellent condition, and suited the visitors. The attendance was 5000. Of Association football tho match was quite a good exhibition, tlui clever work of the visitors being the outstanding feature. Combination was the keynote of their play, individuality being unknown to them. In footwork they excelled, showing masterful control of the hall. They also seemed to be able to anticipate the play of the home side, this assisting them on many occasions to break down attacking movements. The home side made a very creditable showing, but did not possess the necessary finish to their play. Opportunities to score came their way, only to bo lost at a critical moment by mistakes.
In the first spell* play favoured the visitors to some extent, the home forwards settling down to their game but being frequently too far away from the visitors’ backs. Midway through the spell Liang smothered G. McCallum’s ceht-re kick, enabling" .Chen to take, tiie leather down to Ting, whose centre found a weakness in the Bay backs and Chang netted. Enthused with this success, the Chinese attacked consistently. Accepting a centre from Ting, Chang bent the opposition, and scored his second goal. The visitors were very popular with the crowd, and on returning to the dressing room received an enthusiastic reception.
