FOXTON.

(From Our Own Correspondent). Mr W. Simpson, who a short time ago was a member of the local railway stall, and who is now stationed at Frankton Junction, paid a “flying visit” to Foxton last Wednesday. A heavy fog was experienced locally last Saturday morning. A six-roomed dwelling in Avcnuo road, the property of Mr E. J. Spelman (of Palmerston North), was completely gutted by fire at about three o’clock on Sunday morning. The outbreak is of unknown origin and is supposed to have started in one of the front rooms. The outbreak was not noticed until the fire had a good hold. The brigade was promptly on the scene and did good work, the outbuilding being saved. The house and outbuildings were insured for £250. COMBINED CHOIRS CONTEST. On Friday night the local combined choir journeyed to Levin to compete in the final test with that town’s _ combined choir. The first test was held in Foxton last Tuesday, but the results of the competition were not divulged until the final night. Mr Don, of Dunedin, acted as judge on both occasions. The test pieces were as follow: “King of Kings,” “Send Forth Thy Light,” “Radiant Morn” and “Fierce Raged the Tempest.” At the conclusion the judge announced that the Levin choir had won by a margin of_ 10 points, the scores being as follow: —Foxton 159, 141, 168, 159, total of 627; Levin 166, 159, 162, 150, a total of 657 points. During the evening the Rev. Mr Mitchell, of Feilding, and Miss Shaw, of Levin, contributed musical and vocal items, both of whom received a cordial reception. At the conclusion the judge, Mr Don, conducted both choirs combined in the “Gloria.” MAGISTRATE’S COURT. The monthly sitting of the Court was held on Friday before Mr J. L. Stout, S.M. Pahi Halidane, for dumping rubbish on the main Foxton-Palmerston North road, was fined ss, with costs 7s lor riding bicycles after sunset without sufficient lights attached thereto, W. Colder and T. Hunt were each fined ss, with 7s costs. W. Woodham, for permitting a horse to graze on a road was fined 10s, with costs 7s; H. Rout on a similar charge was fined £l, with costs 7s; B. Walls (on two charges) was fined £l, with 7s costs on the first charge and £2 with 7s costs on the second. G. Roberts, charged with tethering a horse in Norbiton road, was fined ss, with costs 7s.

Judgment was entered up for plaintiff in the following civil undefended eases: J. A. Hoffman and Son v. A. Taylor, claim £9, costs £1 18s 6d; K. Carter v. G. Hori, £1 12s, costs 8s; same v. P. Hall, £1 12s 6d, costs 8s; same v. J. Parsons, £7 Is, costs £1 10s 6d; W. Woodham v. P. Halidare, £B, costs £1 10s 6d. The civil case A. Tollisa v. A. P. Easton, which was adjourned from last court day, was finished, occupying most of the time. Evidence was given by the defendant. Judgment with costs was entered up for plaintiff for £l4 10s, and costs amounting to £5 9s. CRIBBAGE CLUB TOURNAMENT. Sanson played Foxton on Thursday night in the second trial contest by the combincci clubs. The visitors won by 12 games, the result being Sanson 51, Foxton 39. A most enjoyable evening was spent. Foxton wih meet Carnarvon Club at Clydesdale school on Wednessday, 23rd inst., leaving here at 7 p.m.
