SECONDARY EDUCATION.

CONTROLLING BODIES (MEET. Tho Palmerston North Technical School Committee and High School Board of Governors met last night, Mr W. E. Durward presiding. CORRESPONDENCE. A circular was received from the Education Department setting out tho powers of secondary school boards regarding finances and showing how emergency matters could bo ntendod to out of balances of incidental funds.—Received.

From the Education Department advising that the board was authorised to expend £l7 7s 6d out of endowment income on electrical fittings.—Received. From the Education Department stating that tho definition of “parent” as prescribed by ail amendment to the schemes of control for secondary schools restricted it to either father or mother, it had been suggested that election by both parents should be allowed as in the case of public schools, where both parents had a right to participate in the election of school committees. The Council of Education had approved of the change but desired an expression of opinion from all boards. —It was decided to advise of the board’s approval of the proposal. From JVlr J. A. Nash, M.P.j forwarding a copy of a bill to provide for the performance of certain religious exercises in schools. —Received. TECHNICAL SCHOOL.

The director of,the Technical School, -Mr G. G. Hancox, reported that earlier in the month representatives of the Board of Governors, Boron trii Council and Kuiranga County Council had visited .the institution. The cadet, company had entertained Captain J. M. Stewart, who was relinquishing eorninand of the company in favour of the director. A new lathe had arrived anti been installed by the boys and the pupils had nearly completed wiring the ground floor of the main buildings and workshops. Authority to spend up to .£2O on electric lamps was sought. The director also asked the consent of the committee to apply for a grant for plant for the woodwork department. Accounts totalling £222 4s 8d were presented for payment. —Adopted, me matter of sending exhibits of the school work to the proposed education court at the New Zealand and South Seas Exhibition at Dunedin next year being left in tlie hands of the director. GIRLS’ HIGH SCHOOL.

The acting lady principal (Miss Hodges) of the girls’ school, reported that the roll stood at 202 with an average attendance for the past_fonr weeks of 195. In the first of the two hockey matches for (ho Bennett Cup the school heat Dannevirko High School by one goal to nil. The school’s representative basket bull teams had defeated Redding in A and B grade matches. Glint trees in the school grounds which had been badly affected by blight were being felled and the timber cut for firewood. —Adopted. BOYS’ HIGH SCHOOL. The rector of the boys’ school, Mr J. Murray, reported that the roll was 299 and the average attendance 289. Since the last meeting there had been three withdrawals. A meeting of the parents’ association would he held at the school on Momluy, July 28, and members of the board were invited to attend it. The first. Rugby fifteen would journey to Wanganui on July 30 to play Wanganui Collegiate School and the board was asked to give what assistance it could in providing motor ears for (he transport of a party of about 20. The surface drainage of tiie grounds in various directions required attention.—Adopted. GENERAL. It was decided to meet, on tho second Monday of each month until tho end of lie present Parliamentary session, as such an arrangement would enable Mr J. A. Nash, M.P., and others more conveniently to attend the meetings. Accounts totalling £57 2s Id in respect to iho high schools, £222 4s 8d for the Technical School and £196 15s in regard lo college house, were passed for payment.
