(From Our Own Correipondenl.J FOOTBALL. The following ore the results of matches played by the local teams last Saturday: Thirds defeated Shannon by 13 to nil. Juniors defeated Awahou juniors by 19 to 3. The seniors defaulted to Otaki and the fourths did not play. SHIPPING. The Wavcrley arrived in port on Saturday at midday with a cargo of benzine and sailed again for Wellington on Sunday’s tide. The Kennedy arrived in port with a general cargo on Sunday and discharged .Monday. Owing to the fact that two boats, the Wuverlcy and Kennedy, would be in port at the same time Inst week, the dredge Ilennessv, which for some time past has been berthed ut the local whargf, was towed over to the other side of the river where it will be moored until put into commission once again. PRESENTATION AND SOCIAL. On Wednesday evening last the members of All Saints’ choir and ve3try entertained Miss I. Crowe at a social hold in honour of her approaching marriage to Mr F. Meyer, the local manager of the New Zealund Shipping Company. The function, which had been very successfully organised by the choir secretary, Mr A. K. Williams, was held at tho residence of Mr G. A. Tver, which had been placed at their disposal for the evening. Tho function took the form of a musical evening, including a series of glee singing which was entered into by the whole party with much enjoyment. Songs were contributed by the following: Rev. W. 11. Walton, Mrs Garment, Mrs Walton, Miss King, Miss Dent, Mr Poole, and Miss Williams, while Miss Y Easton contributed a pianoforte solo. After supper Mr Walton, on behalf of the choir and vestry, presented Miss Crowe with a handsome Doulton salad set and a Doulton plate. In doing so, he referred to Miss Crowe’s long association with the choir and expressed the hope that the new sphere of life into which she was entering would leave her active interest in the choir unabated. He spoke of the steady loyalty of the family to the church and concluded by wishing Miss Crowe and Mr Meyer every good wish for a long and happy future. Mr Mever replied for Miss Crowe, thanking the choir and vestry for their handsome gift and expressing pleasure at the evidence of their esteem. BOROUGH COUNCIL. The ordinary monthly meeting of the Borough Council wus held in the Council Chambers on Monday evening. The following reports were presented: Road Foreman’s Report.—During the month of May, tho road staff have been chiefly engaged with the metal arriving from Belmont. Most of this has now come to hand. Russell street has been metalled from the Park cutting almost to tho water trough and bus also received a coating of clay. A few trucks of li inch Belmont are needed to finish to junction with Avenue road and to crown up tho places where heavy traffic has created ruts. If this is obtained we shall have a good strotch of road for some time to come and which could be tar sealed when the time is opportune. A light dressing of i inch metal lias beon given that portion of Johnston street between Union and Russell streets. This part of the road was very rough. Wo liavo clay on hand to put on this portion of the road. It only needs a light sprinkling to steady tiiu metal. We have also carted tho balunce of county metal (40 yards) ordered last year. This hus been used for patching, principally on boundary roads. Owing to tho arrival of metal during the month we have not been able to clean up Main and C lyde streets quite aa regularly as usual. Tile metal lias to be discharged in a given time otherwise demurrage would be charged.—Adopted. Water and Drainage Report.—During the month the water foreman carried out tlio following work: —Cleaning two sewers that were blocked, cleaning one house drainage block, connecting ono house with tho high pressure water supply and extending a service, carting plumber’s stock to pumping station, fixing a cracked water main, clearing a section of lupins, and eight hours with the gas manager gas fitting. A liouso to house inspection was made of the borough and all injuries and complaints attended to. A recommendation was made to procure a 6-inch water main in case of a break in the main.—Adopted. Pumping Report.—Tho maintenance cost in connection with tho pumping of water to the tower for consumption within the borough, was as follows: —Coal (1 ton 15 cwt.) £5 Os 7d, oil (2 gallons) 9s. wages £7 4s 6d, a total of £l2 14s Id. The number of hours engaged in pumping was 68 and the number of gallons of wator pumped was 595,000, thus making the cipst of pumping per 1000 gallons sd. Maintenance at works cost £6 5s 6d. drainage £2 11s Id, attendance to by-laws and general £2 11s 2d. Outside work produced £1 11s 6d.—Adopted. Gas Works.—The amount of gas manufactured during the month of April was 539 200 feet, which with the amount in the’ holder on April Ist (16,400 ft.) made a total of 555,600 ft. During the month 437 900 ft. was used by consumers, 20,5UUtt. in street lamps, 26,500 ft. at the works and there was 15,0C0ft. in -the holder on May Ist making a total of £09,900 feet and leaving 45,700 feet, representing 8.2 per cent., unaccounted for. Forty-eight tons of coal were carbonised during the month, producing 11,233 cubic feet of gas to the ton. The receipts for the month totalled £294 12s 2d and were made up as follows: Gas sales (lighting) £ll9 19s 9d. heat and power £l2O 3s coke sales £27 5s 4d, fittings £23 12s lid, miscellaneous £1 11s 2d. The expenditure for the month totalled £213 13s 7d and was as follows :■-Coal £124 15s lid, salaries and wages £6l Os oa, fittings, pipes, etc. £2l 4s sd, general repairs £2 2s Id. tools 163 6d > msurance 9s Id stores £1 11s 2d. working expenses £1 18s lid, interest and sinking fund £59 Us The gas manager reported that the apparatus was in good working condition. During tho month new rings were put m the large gas engine at the works. There was at present a large demand for coke. Approximately 100 tons of coal were in hand at the works.—Adopted. The ranger reported that 12 head of stock had been impounded during the month and 7s driving fees collected.— statement—During the month of May the sum of £1465 14s 8d was received "and had been placed to the credit, of the following accounts: District fund £1235 2s 9d, cemetery £lB 7s 6d, water and drainage loan £s' 9s 3d, drainage connection loan £206 5s 2d. leaving cash in hand 10s. The ledger balances on tho 31st Mav were as follow: Imprest cash £lO, general £1270 14s 10, interest £lOl 3s 7d, sanitation £37 9s 6d, waterworks £302 10s 4d, all at debit, a total of £1721 18s 3d. The accounts at credit were : Cemetery £97 18s Id drainage connection loan £77 3s Bcl, gasworks £371 10s sd, hospital and charitable aid £4l 15s lOd. house drainage £l2B 16s sd, water and drainage loan £24 15s lid, library £93 14s 3d, reserves £26 5s sd. town hall £8 2s 6d. town hall pictures £ll4 15s lid, a total of £934 18s sd. The local branch of the Plunkot Society was represented by Mesdamos McMurray (lion, secretary) arid Mrs Austin-Johnston (ex-president) at the opening of the Dominion campaign at Pnlmcrston North last week for arousing public opinion on the question of maternal mortality. Mr Mayer was made the recipient of a handsome cake stand by his employees at the New Zealand Shipping Co.'s office on Saturday morning. Mr J. Wyeth made the presentation and referred to Mr Maycv's popularity and wished him every success in the.future Mr Mayer suitably replied on behalf of himself and Miss Crewe and thanked those present for their expression of good will and kind remarks.
