MANSLAUGHTER CHARGE.

The death or Aiuert Newry irom injuries alleged to have been caused by vuuiain Keif was the subject of an inquest by Mr .uciveen, to.ivi-, to-day. jjeueasud's widow said that she iiud resided with her husband in rooma rented from William Keir. When they went Homo at 0.00 p.m. on June 2 the Keir family said they could not enter. Mr Keir and deceased had a lew words and Keir Knocked her husband down. Deceased got up and then Keir iiit him again. He tell, his head striking the gutter. Constable Orr ueposed to finding the deceased lying on the footpatn. He conveyed him to the police station and thence to the hospital. Witness produced a statement made by Keir in which he usserted that Newry was drunk and iiad abused his sister. He said he put Newry outside the house and locked the door. Later Newry returned, still drunk. He went to prevent Mr and Mrs Newry entering by a window when JNewry struck him with a walking stick. He pushed Newry away and he fell into the gutter. Pie denied having struck Newry on either occasion. The Coroner found that death was caused by a fracture of the skull and laceration of the brain caused by a tail following a blow struck by William Keir, death being accelerated by the fall.

Keir was subsequently brought before the Court and committed tor trial on a charge of manslaughter.
