NOMINAL BREACH.

UNION COMPANY FINED. Per Press Association. WELLINGfON, June 10. At tho Magistrate's Court to-day the Labour Department claimed £lO penalty from the Union Steamship. Company for an alleged breach of the seamen's award in connection with the carriage of logs from Grafton to New Zealand.

It was stated that portion of the deck cargo was stowed higher than the rail of the ship and did not have an even surface to walk on.

For the defence it was urged that tho logs were urgently wanted by the Southland Power Board and that it was only to complete the order that tho captain had been persuaded to take thoin. The KitU.va was licensed to carry 99 tons on deck and on this occasion had only 67 tons. The Magistrate held that a breach had been committed, but thought a nominal penalty was sufficient. The company was fined £2.
