BIG FIRE IN SOUTH
BURNING THIS AFTERNOON. Per Press Association. INVERCARGILL, June 10. The fire at the Imperial Oil Company's store is still burning, but all danger to the adjacent stores is past. The walls of brick and reinforced concrete wore severely cracked, but they withstood tho test of the terrific heat. The benzine from the burst cases was retained by a three-foot high unbroken wall at tho base of the building. Had the south wall, with its high parapet, fallen there would have been no hope of saving the Vacuum and Big Tree Companies' premises. At noon the interior was still like a furnace, and dense clouds of smoke were passing over tho city.
