SHOW COMPETITIONS
JUMPING EVENTS TOO SLOW, SUGGESTION TO AROUSE INTEREST. "Is it possible for us to alter the leaping competitions this year and have two horses going qver the hurdles instead of one at a time as at prosont" ? asked Mr J. A. Nash, M.P., at to-day's meeting of the general committeo of the Manawatu and West Coast A. and P. Association when complaining that tho leaping events were not interesting enough. "'lt is very monotonous," he added, "watching one horse and it would add to the popularity of these evsnts if wo had two horses engaged at the same time." Mr J. 11. Perrett: You cannot do that unless you alter the schedule and obtain the consent of the competitors, Mr Na.sh: Well, surely wo can do that. It should be possible to get the competitors together before the events and ask whother they are agreeable to going over in pairs. Mr Nash added that there would be no interval in the ring events and they intended to do away with waiting for the different competitions. Tho jumping events would conclude each day before the football matches began. Mr Gillies: I think it will be very unwise if we use the oval before the spring show. If the weather is wet yon will undo all the work you have carried out. I should like to know what- sum has been spent, on tho work Mr Penny, the secretary, replied that the amount wa3 in the vicinity of £4OO. Mr M. A. Eliott said he did not agree with Mr Gillies. If they decided not to use the oval until the spring it would mean a loss of revenue to the association which would be unable to make full use of the stand.
Mr Perrett: If you have wet weather vou will find that vou will be unable to iise the oval. If vou have football matches played on it besides jumping events you will have an awful mess. It was finally decided that the question of using the oval be left in the hands of the grounds committee, and. with referenoe to Mr Nash's suggestion that competitors should compete in pairs, it was resolved that enquiries be made to see if the suggestion could be acted upon.
