The board did not intend appointing a successor to Miss Berndston, giving as its' reason the decreased attendance. According .to regulations, the staffing was full but an. injustice was being done to the school on account of the fact that, the loss of an assistant would necessitate tho altering of the organisation of classes in the middle of tho year. College Street with over 100 pupils less, had one more than Terrace End on the staff. As regards sport the boys' teams had competed successfully in the schools senior and junior, and the Saturday sixth grade football competitions, while the girls' hockey teams had shown much improvement. The assistance of school teachers had already enabled much progress to be made. The association placed at the service of schools a large staff of honorary expert instructors. Last year 5388 children were taught to swim efficiently, gaining the association's certificates, of which it was expected over 6000 would be issued in the coming year. It was asked thnt the Government increase its grant of £IOO to the association. — It was decided to support the association and to add that the committee was of the opinion that the Government capitation grant to schools in respect to swimming, as distinct from the assistance granted the association, should be continued. It had been agreed bv the local headmasters that the school holidays for Show week would be better split into three half-days than observing two full days, but the committee was to consider the matter. The committee approved the holidays suggestion and the proposal that the children should give entertainments at ihe Show. . , Members-of-the committee alluded to

the value, of the Show as evidencing the importance of Palmerston North and in promoting the interests of the agricultural, pastoral and dairying industries. It was hoped that the A. and P.
