LOCAL BODIES' LIABILITIES. MORE INFORMATION NEEDED. The question of the liability of public bodies to contribute towards the cost of main highways was raised at to-day's meeting of the . Kairanga County Council, when a letter was re'ceived from the Main Highways Board with reference to the maintenance of main highways, and advising that a form of agreement would be submitted to the Council shortly setting out the conditions under which local bodies would maintain the respective highways on behalf of the Board. Cr. Small said they were in the dark as to what assistance the Highways Board intended to give to the Kairanga County ill maintaining the roads. "We can claim to have roads in this district carrying the heaviest traffic in the country," he said. ""We have at least thirty miles of main roads, and we want to know what assistance the Highways Board intends to give us." It was decided, on the motion of Cr. Small, that the chairman of the Highways Board be written to with a request for information as to is bein" done in regard to the main highways' in the Kairanga County, and also what roads are to be nominated as main highways.
