Senators and representatives fought a last desperate battle to re> lieve the farmers. Many measures, including a bill authorising the construction of cruisers and .the modernising of battleships, the deficiency Appropriation Bill carrying funds to begin the operation of the bonus law and other purposes, failed in the final crush of legislation. A special resolution passed in the last five- minutes by the . House to make the bonus appropriation available was lost in the Senate. The appointment of a Senate Committee to sit during the election campaign and investigate the expenditures of the candidates for President, Vice-President, and Congress and Federal offices was authorised by the Senate.
