BRITISH SUBMARINE.
LARGEST IN THE WORLD. SATISFACTORY TRIALS. LONDON, Dec. 27. Tho giant British submarine XI successfully carried out prolonged trials in the Channel. Full information about tho vessel, which is tho largest underwater craft afloat, has not yet ben officially disclosed, but tho Times learns that its surface displacement is 2780 tons, compared with 2140 tons tho next largest British submarine K 26, and 2114 of the largest American VI. When submerged, the throe submarines are 3600 tons, 2770 and 2520 tons respectively. Germany’s largest, U 142, had a submerged displacement of 2200 tons. It is understood that the XI carries six 5.5 inch guns, compared with two 4-inch in tho latest types built for ordinary service. Equally remarkable is the advance in speed. Compared with 24 knots attained on t.ho surface by tho latest “K” boats, tho XI is believed to bo capable of doing 33 knots. It has a cruising radius of 6000 miles, while the America V type is reported good for 20 knots with a radius of 5000 miles. Tho fact that the XI has a crow of 100 officers and men is itself an indication of its size as the K boats carry only 54 and the L class 08, The submarines mostly used in tho war. had 30. Times.
