WILD WEATHER.
EXPERIENCED AT' WELLINGTON
SMALL STEAMER NEARLY
WRECKED
(Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Dec. 28,
Wellington experienced wild weather last night. The light wind in the evening developed into a gale in the early hours of the morning, there being a heavy rainfall. A certain amount of damage has been reported. A number of fences and hoardings and the wireless aerial on the military barracks wore blown down. The gale continued this- morning. ■ The harbour in particular is feeling the effects. The small steamer Progress narrow*,' escaped from wreck this morning. While going to Thorndon for coal sho struck the full force of the gale and was blown towards the rocks at Oriental Bay. Two anchors and the engines failed to hold her. A tug was dispatched hurriedly and arrived just in time, the Progress being within yards of the rocks. It has been necessary to postpone nearly all the holiday attractions. STORK PREDICTED. The Government Meteorologist telegraphed to-(jay:—The indications are for westerly winds, strong to gale, and hacking by west to south, _ Stormy weather may be with heavy rain. The barometer will be rising shortly.
Many holiday-makers like to take a little fancy-work with them. New shipments of knitting silks for jumpers, etc., have just arrived at the C. M, Ross Co., Ltd. Those include cable knitting silk in cinnamon, coffee, nigger, ivory, almond green and brown, 4s lid 4oz. hank. Closing Saturday, December 29th, but open late Monday, New Year’s Eve.—Advt. •
