COST OF SCHOOLS.

MINISTER HOPES FOR DECREASE

(Per Press Association.)

AUCKLAND, Dec. 28. The_ comparative cost of school construction was a subject to which the Hon. C. J. Parr devoted his attention during his recent visit to Australia. Mr Parr said that the schools in Melbourne and Sydney wore constructed more cheaply than similar buildings in Now Zealand. Ho saw a now brick school in Melbourne which was erected 30 per cent, more cheaply than would have been the case in Auckland or Wellington. “My recent investigations into building costs in New Zealand were quite justified,” said Mr Parr. “I am afraid New Zealand is about the dearest place in tho British Empire' for the erection of schools, .and perhaps for other buildings as well. By adopting the recommendations of the conference of last October which I held with -the Education Department and the architects, I think we shall be able to cheapen the cost in Now Zealand, which is now altogether too high. The taxpayer is not getting enough for his money in each building.”
