“This Christinas has been one of the busiest we have experienced for many years past, the volume of postal traffic handled by this bffice having. exceeded all expectations, ’’ remarked —r R. Martin* postnuistei - at Palnierstdh North to a “Standard 1 ’ reporter -today. “There has been a phenomenal increase all round, particularly in. the number of telegrams handled,” he added. “On Monday we forwarded 1975 telegrams as compared with 1389 for the corresponding day last yfeat. Telegrams received for delivery Were 1937 as compared 'with 1400 last year. Telegrams transmitted through this office to other places numbered 2102, as against 1337 twelve months ago.

“Apart from the telegraph department there has been a big increase in all classes of correspondence. Our work has been added to by English mails which have come to hand, but apart from this, Dominion postings of all kinds have been much heavier than last year. I have .no detailed figures tO give as the only list of this kind We Compile is in connection With telegrams. “Last Saturday there was such a volume of correspondence that the letter carriers made tWo deliveries, which is quite unusual for a Saturday, the half-holiday. There was nothing else for it, otherwise the staff would have had great difficulty in clearing the surplus mail on Monday. Yesterday, we had quite a busy morning, although business slackened down somewhat in the afternoon. I had anticipated an increase in Christinas traffic this year to the extent of 20 per cent, over 1922, but the increase has approximated to 40 per cent.”
