TROTTING CLUB.

ANNUAL MEETING. PROTEST AGAINST TAXATION, The annual general meeting of the Manawatu Trotting Club was held hist evening, the president, Mr L. IT, Collinson, being in the chair. There was a good attendance of members. In moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet, tho president said that unfortunately the year did not show a good financial result, due to heavy taxation and tho slump. It was difficult to make a oneday meeting pay, but it was hoped in the near future to obtain a concession in the shape of an extra day. The trotting people were to be congratulated throughout the Dominion for tho strides made during the year. The two sports, racing and trotting, lent themselves to development side by side, and in this connection he noted with pleasure tho growth of the friendly feeling between those in control of the respective branches of racing. Tho fall in totahsator investments had been pronounced till over the country, and while this resulted in a loss to the clubs, it was having a good effect in stabilising the finances of the Dominion. Although a loss of £446 had boon incurred by the club on the year’s working, much had been done in the district to promote the interests of trotting. The motion, which was seconded by Mr E, IV. Vine, was carried without discussion. Officers wore elected as follows; —Patron, Mr J. A, Nash, M.P.; president, Mr L. 11. Collinson; vice-presidents, Messrs G. Craw and R. A. McKenzie; hon. treasurer, Mr G; Mcliroy; committee (three vacancies), Messrs F. Smith, J. R. Anderson and A, J. Mahon; auditor, .Mr R. Davis. On the motion of Mr A. Richards, seconded by Mr P. F. O’Connor, it was unanimously affirmed: “That this meeting emphatically protests against tho exorbitant taxation trotting clubs are called upon to pay tho Government, and hereby (’alls upon the Government to grant relief, as the present taxation, it continued, means the elimination of all country trotting clubs in the Dominion, and will thus deprive country residents of a healthy and legitimate relaxation and sport, which they are entitled to enjoy in this free country.’ A hearty vote of thanks was accorded tho secretary (Mr A. 11. Mattson) for his efficient services during the past year.
