WORD BUILDING.

BEACH SOCIETY’S COMPETITION. The winners in the word-building competition conducted by the Waikanuo Beach Improvement Society wore announced today. In all 3549 entries were received, from all parts, of the country. The winner of the first prize (£SO) is H. N. Maddox, Ractihi, who made 1835 words out of the words “Waikanae Beach.” The judges were the Rev. E. T. Cox and Messrs J. Kinder and F. Foote. Tiro judges, in their remarks on the lesult of tfie competition, state: We beg to hand you the results of tho word-building competition, and to congratulate the society on its successful issue. A total number of 3549 entries have been received, competitors entering from all over New Zealand and a few from Australia, including one from Queensland. The complete lists covered a very wide range, tho lowest being five and the highest 26,264 words. While the words disallowed represented in many cases over 90 per cent., it is significant that in none of the winning lists was the number of words rejected high. Many of the lists bore evidence of exhaustive research, and it is a matter _ for reKt that many competitors quite ovorced the scope of the competition. Many lists were carefully and methodically arranged; others quite the reverse. _ Only one Gisborne candidate obtains a winning place, and that not a high one. The first prize goes to Ractihi, the second to Auckland, and the third to \\ ollington.
