BIG HOCKEY.

SHIELD MATCH ON SATURDAY. Considerable interest is being manifested in the hockey match to-morrow between Auckland and Manawatu for the New Zealand challenge shield. The northerners have held this coveted trophy since 1919 when they wrested it from Canterbury, who had, a few weeks previously, taken it from Manawatu after a most exciting game. The Aucklanders this year were granted permission to take the shield on tour. They have defeated Wanganui, drawn with Nelson, and been defeated by Hawke s Bay, though in neither of these contests was the shield played for. It transpires that no challenge having been lodged by Hawke s Bay, Auckland had asked the New Zealand Association for permission for the match against Hawke’s Bay to be for the shield, but this not complying with the regulalations, the request was refused. AuciCland having held the shield since 1919 it will be interesting to see if Manawatu tomorrow can again secure possession of it. The local players are in fine fettle and nave been training most assiduously. A keen contest is expected and there should be a large crowd present. The match will commence at 3 p.m. sharp. In the evening the visitors will be the guests of the loca association at a social evening. Business of interest to local hockey enthusiasts was transacted at the meeting ol the New Zealand Association on Monday. 11. Hatch was appointed one releree for the rest match against Australia and the other is to be appointed by the visitors. It was decided that the selectors of the New Zealand team should pick the players ten days before the date of the test match. Another decision was that a selector of a team should not referee in a shield match. The Hawke’s Bay Sub-Association will play Wairnrapa for the Nordon Cup tomorrow and Poverty Bay will play ■ the winners on September 13th or 16th. LAD lES’ TOURNAMENT, (Per Press Association.) The ladies’ hockey tournament was continued to-day when the section play was completed, with the result that Poveity Bay and Wellington will meet in the final for the Izard Uup on Saturday. Additional results were:— A Section.—Marlborough 3 beat 1) ending 0. B section: Poverty Bay 5 beat Manawatu 2. Poverty Bay’s victory over Manawatu left them the winners in B section.
