CLYDESDALE HORSE SOCIETY.

The' annual general mooting of Lho Clydesdale Horse Society was held on Wednesday, May 31, at the Otago A. and P. Association’s board room, Dunedin. Mr George 0. Thomson presided, about 40 members being present. Before proceeding to business, a vole of condolence was passed with the family of the late J. 11. Jarman, of Darlield, Canterbury, members standing. The hon. secretary, Mr A. Hunter, road tho report for the year ending April 30, 1922. Thirty-two new members were elected during the year, the total now being 334. In connection with veterinary inspection nine stallions and 33 mares have been passed, and one mare rejected for ringbone. Towards the end of last year an invitation was received from the Draught Horse Committee of the Canterbury A. and P. Association to meet them, with a view to arranging a union of our forces in the interests of breeders throughout tho Dominion. A meeting took place in Christchurch in November, and the following arrangement was decided upon:—(1) That this society should take over and, subject to the rules of registration, publish in the Clydesdale stud book tho, entries then in hand for Hie draught horse stud book; (2) that the whole council, instead of the usual one-third, should retire at the end ot the year. It has since been- agreed that those who registered in tho draught horse stud book should be accepted as members up to April 30, 1923, without payment of the usual nomination foe. The inclusion of the above mentioned entries has delayed the printing of volume V. of the stud book by several mouths. There are over 200 entries of stallions and over 500 mares and fillies, much the greatest number since volume 1. The British Clydesdale Horse Society’s gold medals, competed for at Timaru, were both Don by Messrs Thomson’s, Ltd., of Dunedin, with Scotland’s Victor (1198) and Lady Scotland (1871). The Wright, Stephenson and Co., Ltd., cup was won at the Otago Stallion Show in September by Messrs Thomson’s, Ltd., with Brilliant Again (1101), the same firm being also reserve with Scotland’s Victor (1198). The Union Steam Ship Co.’s cup was won at tho Waikato A. and P. Association’s Show at Hamilton by Mr J. C. Begbie’s filly Dhole's Pride V. 5. Our assets show a surplus over liabilities of £3OO lbs 7d, as against £B3 16s 7d last year. Then, however, we owed £233 for printing volume IV. of the stud book, whereas this year volume V. was not m print, though the cost will ho about (he same as that of volume IV. Last year there was about £SO of a contingent liability for medals, while this year the amount will not ho more than £ls.' Our total receipts have been £4Ol 2s 3d, as against £678 6s 6d last year. Last year we collected quite a large amount of outstanding subscriptions and entry foes, and, of course, the balance is harder to collect. Wo also had a good sheaf of entries for several clearing sales. The total payments amount to £416 15s 4d, as against £364 18s lid for the previous year, £233 of which for.volume IV. of the stud hook, and about £3O for medals, was incurred previous to last year. To put the position in another way, our average receipts for the last three years have been £434 12s 6d and our payments £423 6s 6d, leaving only £ll 13s of a margin. It is hoped that those who owe amounts to the society will take this to heart and clear off their indebtedness. On the motion of the president the report and balance-sheet were adopted. Lockheed moved that now the amalgamation of the Clydesdale Horse Society and the New Zealand Draught Horse Stud Book was completed, secretaries of the A. and P. Associations he asked to receive entries for the stud hook on behalf of the Clydesdale Society. Tins would be a groat convenience to many breeders, an assistance to tho secretary, and also a help to A and P. Associations in bringing them more closely into touch with breeders. This motion was carried. Mr Deunislon reported that an amount of about £35 would be forthcoming from the Canterbury A. and P. Association on account: of fees for the entries handed over for publication m the Clydesdale .Stud Book which amount would further improve’ the credit balance of the society. Votes of thanks were accorded the retiring officers, special mention being mane of the work of members of conned, one ot whom, Mr J. The number of mares is over 500. and the stallions over 200, 2—Veterinary examinations: The following have been passed; One mare on account of D. 6. Wright and five mares on account of Robert Kennedy. There were no rejects. 3 —Export certificates: These have been issued for nine stallions and three mares. The scale of fees for registration, etc., was revised, and it was decided that registration he insisted upon before a transfer certificate is issued. It was decided for ihe coining season to offer the Union steamship Uompany’s Cup for competition to the Hawke's Bay A. and P. Association, and the British Clydesdale Horse Society’s medals to the Canterbury A and P. Association (2) and Auckland A. and P. Association 12). The mooting then adjourned till after tho annual meeting, when sub-committees were appxnted. Mr I /ookhood brought up (lie question of who should bo tho recognised breeder of an animal, and pointed out. that tho mating breeder, who deserved the credit, should not be robbed of tho honour. Tinge is, of course, a certain amount to be said on both sides. It was agreed that for showing purposes tho mating breeder’s name should no stated as it is in registrations in the Clydesdale Stud Book, but that in some cases where competition is confined to the breeders it might bo restricted too much if only mating breeders were allowed to compete. It was resolved that in the ease of change of owner of registered Clydesdales, unless transfers are in order, tho produce of such animals will not be eligible tor registration.
