He estimated tho cost of tilling in the present watertablcs to the required level with metal, I and forming a 14-inc h channel 3 inches deep, to 55s per chain. Most of the streets ran east and west through the town and watertables could noi be constructed until underground drains were provided for the carry- || ing away of the stormwater, as in these || particular cases fairly deep drains must be /| retained for t ho pur|X).se. From the corn- || mcncement of last summer when tarring )) operations were commenced seven miles of j) footways had been top-dressed.
