As a matter of fact the £5,000,000 loan recently raised has wholly been allotted for specific purposes, and would, in any case, be far from sufficient to meet the liabilities of local bodies in this respect.” Air T. The chairman stated that Mr: Broadbejt was part-owner of a sawmill m i I'mutoi Riding, and his carts they alleged, did damage to the, roads, which the council was asking Mr Broiulbelt to help to repair, b v providing timber to tut amount oi about£4o. The, roads under discussion were m i the back blocks of the county, and had not; been built to carry much traflic. W mist j the council did not want to prohibit tins . heavy traflic, they did want to protect the ' ratepayers, and see that the roads were kept in good repair. Again, they must. .hold any damage against the ones who did it, atm the question was, could they come to some arrangement with Mr Broadbell whereby excessive damage could be repaired by him . Mr Broadbell was quite agreeable to this course, and the chairman mlormcd him that the matter would he discussed at the next meeting of the council, and an answer torwarded to him. j
