SUICIDE AT DANNEVIRKE.

DEATH OF PALMERSTON NORTH RESIDENT.

At Dannovirke on Tuesday an inquiry was held touching- the death of George Peek, retired farmer, who was found in I hat town on Monday morning with his throat cut.

Dr. Bcedie gave evidence that lie liad examined tlio body, which appeared to have been dead for about a week. There was a largo wound below the left ear, which could have been inflicted by deceased himself with a sharp instrument held in the right hand. Henry Smith, brickniaker, of Palmeraton North, deposed that lie had known the deceased from boyhood, tie knew he had bought a placo at Palmerston North, and had been living there for some time by himself. He last: saw deceased alive on Sunday, 7th inst., when he was at witness's place for dinner. Deceased complained of a pain in his side, but appeared to be in his usual spirits. Deceased left the house about 3 o'clock that afternoon and did not mention about going to Dannevirke, Deceased had never complained to witness of financial worries, but had mentioned that his brother had taken his Jifo, and said ho could not understand his doing so, but if a man were suffering from any complaint or illness he could then understand his taking his life. Samuel George Peck, farmer, Wiiiono, deposed that he was a nephew of deceased. He last saw his uncle alive on Monday, Bth inst., about 10 o'clock in the morning.

The Coroner returned a verdict in accordance with the medical testimony, death being duo to haemorrhage from a. wound in the throat, self-inflicted. There was no evidence io show tho state of deceased's mind at the time.
