MAGISTRATE’S COURT.
THIS MORNING'S BUSINESS. A couple of police cases were dealt with by Mr, J. L. Stout, S.M., at the Magistrate’s Court this morning before a lengthy civil list was entered on. Natha Andrews, a young Hindoo, who had been found in possession of Mr C. T. Salmon’s bicycle in Levin, was sentenced to 14 days’ imprisonment with hard labour on a charge of having stolon tho machine. An alternative charge of having converted the bipyclo illegally to his own uso was withdrawn by Senior-Sergeant Fraser. Prisoner appeared yesterday afternoon with an explanation that he had purchased the bicycle from a man in tho street, whoso name ho did not know, and was remanded until this morning in order to allow him an opportunity to find a taxi-driver, whom, ho said, had witnessed the transaction. Constable McEntee, who accompanied prisoner in bis quest, stated that the suppositious driver had not been located, although all the/ stands had been visited. Accordingly tho -Magistrate imposed the penalty as above, with an order that tho bicycle be returned to its owner. A first offender against tho laws of sobriety was fined 10s in default 24 hours’ incarceration. CIVIL CASES. Adler and Company forthwith, in default 21 days’ imprisonment^ P. Kirioiia was given the option of going to gaol for three days or paying J. Nathan and Company, Ltd., £2 10s forthwith. J. Bono was ordered to pay £2O 8s to J. Nathan and Company, Ltd., forthwith, in default 14 days’ imprisonment, warrant to be suspended for two months in order that defendant might have an opportunity of 1 Tho’ choice of paying £ll 13s 5d to A. Do Luon forthwith or going to gaol for seven days was given to C. F. Sexton. W. H. Lambert was ordered to £2 per month to the New Zealand Times Company off a debt of £3B 6s. 11 Ft Hay was ordered to pay £l2 9a to E. .Ainsworth forthwith, in default 14 days’ incarceration, warrant to be suspended so long as defendant pays £2 per month. F, Oi Johansson was ordered to pay G. P. Adler and Company £8 7s forthwun or go to gaol for seven days, warrant to be suspended on payment of £1 a month. G. Wood was ordered 14 days m prison in default of paying C. E. Edgar £l2 18s forthwith. .-y, - H Cropland was ordered to pay < £l a month. off a debt of £6 17s 6d owing to H. L. {Young, Ltd, After the “Standard” went to press yeatcrdaviafternoon the hearing was concluded of »i case in which Jack Richardson Thomas denied/being the putative father of an unborn child.
