An alleged gold mining fraud was the subject of a civil action in the Supreme Court. Angelina Bernard, married woman, sought to recover from William Browning, an engineer, £OOO on account of alleged fraudulent misrepresentation, whereby defendant had induced her to purchase for £SOO certain worthless mining script in a proposition in Westland known as “Bagley’s Reward Mining Company.” The jury’s verdict was that defendant had distinctly misrepresented the value of the shares, and awarded plaintifl £SOO damages with costs.
