SATISFACTORY REPORTS

' Per Press Association. c WELLINGTON, Jan. 5. i, During the 'week ended January stb 21 cases of influenza were reported in the Wellington Health District and 11 pneumonia. Dr. Makgill, Aching Chiot Health Officer, stated to-day that the Dominion returns for the past fortnight showed a very large diminution in the number of .-cases of -iufluenza and pneumonia. During the week ending December 22nd 248 cases of influenza were notified throughout the Dominion, whereas in the week ending January 5 there were but 107 notifications. Regarding pneumonia, 43 cases were notified in the week ending December 22nd, and 25 cases in the week ending January sth. The.chief diminution in influenza was in Auckland, where the number of cases ih the week ending December was 224, while only 78 cases were reported- in the week ending January sth. In Canterbury there had been a marked decrease also. During the week ending December 22nd 20 cases of influenza and 10 cases of pneu--1 monia were notified, and only 5 cases I of influenza and 5 of pneumonia during the week ending January sth. Dr. Makgill added that every year for a long time a number,of pneumonia cases following influenza had arisen, and the existence of such cases was of very little significance. Indeed, there is every reason to be satisfied _ with the present position, and there is nothing to suggest any alarm whatsoever.

CASES ON THE PATEENA,

WELLINGTON, Jan. 7. Three members of the crew of the Pateena developed influenza on the way across from Nelson and Picton and on arrival of the vessel this morning they were removed to the hospital. Th?ir names are Russell Hancock and Bairncross. The hospital authorities state that their condition is not serious. . ■ The Pateena is being thoroughly fumigated and will not bo able to leave for-Picton and Nelson to-day or on Friday, The Moernki is being sent to Picton. only today and an endeavour will be made to send the Mapourika to Picton and Nelson on Friday. . The wgtersiders have refused to work the Pateena.
