THE MANAWATU. TOURNAMENT.

WIN FOR JO&LY’S. RINK,

Yesterday afternoon the final in the Manawatu Centro’s full rink tournament was played on the Palmerston North green between rinks skipped by Jolly and Ramsay. The green was rather slow after the rain that fell in the morning, but it was very true, and some good play was seen by the fair number of spectators who watched the game. , The result of the contest w r as a win for Jolly’s rink by 28 points to 14, play, leasing on the 20th head, and the difference in the scores just about represents the difference between the rinks on . the day; ( The rinks were; Hancock, Vuutier, Sollitt, Jolly (skip), and Grant, Stewart, Needham, Ramsay (skip). On the first head Jolly was lying four when the skips changed ends; Ramsay saved throe, but Jolly drew another and started the score w,ith two The next head was a short one, and Stewart put a bowl right on kitty, but Jolly played a firm shot and made a dead heat. On the next end Soli itt put in two good bowls and Jolly was lying three when ho wont down to play. He put in a couple of good ’shots, and Ramsay failing, Jolly scored five and was leading by seven to nil. The next head was particularly interesting. Vautier arid Sollitt put in two good bowls on the next end, but Ramsay managed to save one. On the sixth head Stewart drew' within a few inches of the kitty, but was beaten by Vautier. Needham trailed the kitty and lay twm, and Ramsay drew another. Jolly drove, and scattered the bunch, but the result was that his opponents lay four,, and Ramsay drawing another he secured five, and the score was eight all. Jolly scored one on the seventh head, and Ramsay one on the eighth, and . the score was nine all, and from this point Jolly wont ahead and maintained the lead to the finish. On the ninth head Jolly scored four as the result of a firm shot on his opponents’ bowls altering the position from two down to four up. On the 10th Sollitt drew one and Jolly two, and Ramsay driving without result, his opponents scored throe. On the next three heads Jolly scored singles, and on the 13th head the score was Jolly 19, Ramsay 9. On, the 14th bead both leads got near kitty, but Needham put one right on kitty. With a running shot Sollitt got the shot, hut Needham again drew a counter and Ramsay scored a single. The 15th head was the full length, and Sollitt put up a fine shot. Ramsay drove and got the kitty, but Jolly still lay. Ramsay drove again and missed, and Jolly drew another and was loading by 21 to 10, On flic 16th head, when he was lying three down, Ramsay drove and made a dead heat. The head being replayed Grant drew, two good ones, but Sollitt put up a perfect shot and lay one. Needham played a. firm shot and lay one, but with his next he was unfortunate and promoted one of (ho opposing bowls— Jolly 22, Ramsay KJ. On the 17th head Grant drew the shot, but was beaten by Vautier, and Sollitt putting in another, Jolly lead by 25 to 10. With only four heads to play, am] 15 down, Ramsay’s chance was very sm.all, and with the object of trying to secure a big score ho adopted driving • tactics. On the 18th head Vautier had in when Needham drove and lay one. „ Sollitt took out Needham’s scoring howl, and the latter 'drove and burnt the head. The head being replayed, Needham again drove and burnt the head, and on being played for the third time, Sollitt had two in when. Ramsay drove and made a dead heat. When the'head was played for the fourth time Hancock drew the shot but was beaten by Stewart, and Ramsay lay two. Sollitt drew the shot, and Ramsay drove and made-another dead head. 'Hie head was. played for the fifth time and Vautier put two on the kitty. Needham made a good but unsuccessful attempt to alter (lie position, and his skip drove without result. Jolly scored two arid led by 27 to 10. On the 19th head Jolly drove and took out his own bowl, and' Ramsay scored four, making the score Jolly 27, Ramsay 14. On the 20th head Ramsay drove unsuccessfully and Jolly scored a single, the game ending: Jolly 28, Ramsay 14. Cheers were given for winners and losers, and both were congratulated on the excellent play shown.
