"HOUSE OF SEVEN CABLES."

P ALMERSTON - NORTH RAILWAY STATION.

CONGESTION IN THE YARDS

Referring to the Palmerston North railway station and its facilities the New Zealand Railway Officers’ Advocate, says, under the heading of the “Palmerston North branch”: Generally, business hero is very brisk, and the funny part about the whole' railway system of Palmerston yard is that the same conditions obtain here as did twelve years ago. No alterations and no improved accommodation. Some increase in revenue, though, and some increase in language of staff in making that possible. It has been pointed out before that a small temporary outlay in this yard would relievo the situation till the new station comes, and any up-to-date business concern would do it at once, if only to relieve the congestion. The day is coming,; if something is not done, when trains will be held up till the yard is cleared. Will the G.M. kindly take note and act?—otherwise hi 3 saving finance will bo penny wise and pound foolish. It does not take a great deal professional skill to see the defects of the Palmerston North yard, and a professional man is understood to have said that ho could in a couple of months shift things, that now exist as an eyesore, in such a way that we could put in storage room for easily 600 waggons. The cost would not be prohibitive, and the wonder is, and always will bo, whv this is not done.

Then again, the station building itself is known as “the house of seven gables.” Tin's is also inadequate, and consequently a. lot of stuff which under proper conditions would be housed right away ha.s to be Wt on luggage harrows, pfatform, etc. The whole railway traffic is rapidly increasing here, and if the future continues .as the past has done, we can expect, trouble unless alterations are effected, and that soon.
