THE PERONNE FRACAS.
N AN AUSTRALIAN KILLED.
LONDON, Dec. 30
An enquiry by the British authorities with reference to the fracas at Peronne last November shows that two Australians belonging to a graves detachment entered a cafe, where they were accused by a Frenchman belonging to a reconstruction camp of mixed nationalities, of stealing a hatchet. 'The Australians denied the accusation; /but were assaulted. Tho Austrilians forced their Way to_ the door and ran down tho road. The "assailants followed, firing a_re'volver. One of the Australians was kiaed and the other was severely wouhded. The commander of Jhe reconstruction camp, in a letter, deeply regrets the incident, and pays warm tribute to, the Australians' gallantry in the. war, and the good conduct of thos,e in the neighbourhood. Four Frenchmen have been* arrested and charged with murder.
