WASHINGTON, Dec. 29., Persistent attempts have been made by the Democrats to induce the "mild reservation” group amongst the Republicans to agree to modifications of the reservations, in order to allow the reconsideration of the Peace Treaty to meet President Wilson’s major objections.
THE INDUSTRIAL CONFERENCE. GOMPERS CRITICISES WILSON’S FAILURE. Australian-New Zealand Cable Association. WASHINGTON. Dec; 29, Mr Samuel Gompers has issued a vigorous criticism of the failure of President Wilson s industrial conference to recognise definitely the trades unions as a basis for representation. Mr Gompers said that any plan to establish or maintain, anything like fair relations between workers and employers must avoid compulsory features, declaring that the mass of American workers. wore American citizens, and in that sovereign citizenship free men. Proposals for compulsory labour are repugnant,- “In order to promote constructive and permanent changes that will eliminate the causes of much industrial unrest,” Mr Gompers said, “the conference should consider the governmental agencies to provide the necessary information and assistance in obtaining continuous betterment of_ working conditions This problem must ultimately oo worked out by employers and employees with the asiatonco of. the Government.”
