CRUMBLING TO CHAOS.
STARVING CENTRAL EUROPE. HOTELS LIKE CONDEMNED CELLS LONDON, Dec. 5. r Sir Wi 11 iam Goode, Director of Relief Measures, gives a terrible picture of winter privatiuus in Central Europe. Summarising the results of his latest inquiries, he states that lie found one of the main streets of Vienna blocked daily with hearses, nine-tenths of them causing the bodies of children. The principal hotels ot the city, formerly among the most luxurious in Europe, arc now bare, almost without food or lights, and cold as dungeons. “I stayed in one of the best for 10 days,” says Sir William, ‘‘but it was like being in the cell of a condemned murderer without hope of a reprieve. Finally 1 was forced to spend £4O Inlying fuel sufficient for a small fire for two days.” Even the well-to-do people are burning their furniture for fuel. Tuberculosis is rapidly exterminating the starving Serbians, especially the children, and Central Europe generally is, on the verge of crumbling into chaos. Vast relief measures are most urgent.
