The War Graves Commission has refused to allow relatives to erect private memorials; in Franco and Flanders. Their decision i» sharply criticised on the grounds of soul* lessness and the appalling monotony of the 500,000 uniform gravestones. Speaking in. the House of Commons Loid Robert Cecil declared that the decision was inflicting unjustifiable suffering. Mr Winston Churchill (Minister for War} uphold the uniform memorial for soldiers. The feeling was that prince and peasant, private and officer, should rest together m common dignity and honour. . The Times, in a leader, says that it is repugnant to British feeling that family rights; should bo surrendered to the State.
